Full job description
The Social Worker is responsible for program delivery to individuals, families, and groups. Programs include Child Welfare, Family Support, Mental Health, Drug & Alcohol referrals. Works with the Family Wellness team to develop and implement prevention and intervention strategies, and preventive community programs to support individuals and families, this includesd all cased based deliverables.
Key Responsibilities
Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Skeetchestn Indian Band policies, practices, and procedures as directed by the Manager, Family Support. Maintains confidentiality as required pertaining to members, clients, employees, and general matters of SIB
Program Delivery
- Meets with clients, assesses and refers clients and families to appropriate voluntary services and resources which may include traditional healing, mental wellness support, clinical counselling, treatment etc. Ensures procedures are followed to provide immediate support for high risk individuals (drug / alcohol abuse, depression, suicide risk, abuse etc.)
- Supports clients to navigate services. Support may include making appointments to connect to resources, assisting with application forms for treatment; taking clients to appointments.
- Builds trusting relationships with clients and looks for opportunities to create connection that support individual client needs.
- Develops and implements family / client prevention / intervention strategies and plans in accordance with approved client plans and program policies, procedures and standards, and applicable government regulations.
- Monitors client plans and revises as required, keeps updated files on clients.
- Works with Family support Manager and team to respond to crisis and unexpected events/incidents/cased base deliverables. Works to mobilize community strength as appropriate.
- Liaises with Ministry of Children & Families, the Skeetchestn Community School regarding any child (ren) who may be at risk.
- Works with the Skeetchestn Community School on attendance issues, substance abuse issues. Helps the school as they support families. Participate in multi-disciplinary meetings.
- Liaise with foster families to keep them well informed of cultural and community events.
- Work with existing agencies and services throughout the region to provide a high level of family support and mental health related assistance.
- Liaises with Secwépemc Child and Family Services Agency and follows all protocols and policies regarding child welfare.
- Provides one-on-one support to build relationships.
- With the holistic views of supporting families (ie. aunts, uncles, grandparents) facilitates the delivery of workshops, education, and holistic health awareness activities for the community including the youth, parents, elders, and adults. Develops and implements programing to serve community needs (boys/girls club, winter and summer clothing program, household assistance program, grocery/gas cards etc.)
- Maintain the community’s food bank, organizing re-stocks as needed.
Administration
- Provides program and client reports to appropriate external agencies and organizations as required.
- Provides regular updates and reports to the Manager, Family Support
- Collaborates with the Family Support Manager with client/family files and future plan steps necessary and all case based deliverables.
- Develops and maintains clear, accurate and orderly program and client files and records. Ensures confidentiality protocols are always followed.
- Keeps up to date on all related internal programs, policies, procedures and standards and keeps abreast of any changes to the Family, Child and Community Services Act.
Other related duties as required.
Qualifications
Training, Education, Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work or directly related field.
- Minimum 1 year of directly related experience.
- Experience working with Social Development programs.
- Experience working within an Indigenous community.
- Experience working with individuals with multiple barriers (health, mental health, trauma etc.)
- Current Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence.
- Satisfactory criminal records check (vulnerable sector).

- Working knowledge of child welfare legislation.
- Ability to build positive relationships built on trust.
- Highly-developed communication and interpersonal skills including conflict resolution.
- Strong cultural sensitivity and understanding. Able to demonstrate respect and caring without judgement.
- Understands social determinants of health and wellness within Indigenous communities.
- Knowledge of the history of Indigenous people in Canada and the impact of historical trauma.
- Knowledge of mental health and substance abuse.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Ability to exercise a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with clients, community members and co-workers. Strong engagement skills and the ability to respond to concerns and needs.
- Intermediate computer skills including MS Office.
- Genuine respect for Skeetchestn Indian Band culture and protocols.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in a variety of setting including office, client homes and community settings. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required. This position must adhere to an on-call availability schedule. You may be attending conferences, events and doing in house visits to clients homes.
$33.07–$43.57 an hour
