About the Role

School District No. 74 (Gold Trail) is seeking an energetic and dedicated Indigenous Community Outreach Support Worker (ISW) to support Indigenous students within the district. This temporary position is funded by the First Peoples Education Council and will run until July 3, 2026.

The successful applicant will be a member of the Nlaka’pamux Nation and will support students attending Kumsheen ShchEma-meet School.

Reporting to the District Principal of Indigenous and Inclusive Education, the ISW plays a key role in building connections between students, families, schools, and community resources to promote student attendance, engagement, and success.


Key Responsibilities

  • Act as an advocate for Indigenous students
  • Support and encourage student and parent involvement in school activities
  • Serve as a resource for students, families, and school staff
  • Build relationships with parents and Band Education Coordinators
  • Attend community meetings and events when invited
  • Promote a positive, respectful, and inclusive school environment
  • Act as a positive role model for Indigenous students and all learners
  • Participate in staff meetings, professional development, and parent interviews as needed
  • Promote cross-cultural awareness within the school community
  • Assist in planning and participating in cultural activities and events
  • Carry out additional duties as assigned by the principal

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Grade 12 (or equivalent) plus:
    • Minimum one year of post-secondary education in Indigenous studies, human services, life skills, substance abuse programs, or counseling strategies
      OR completion of an Education Assistant Program
  • Preference will be given to applicants of Indigenous ancestry
  • Experience working with Elders and Indigenous resource staff
  • Strong knowledge of local Indigenous language and culture
  • Understanding of Indigenous educational issues
  • Experience working with elementary or secondary Indigenous students
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Proficiency with current technology and planning tools
  • Knowledge of school programs and available community resources
